DC Wildcats blank Lady Jay pucksters

KASSON - The Waseca girls' hockey team got off plenty of shots but could not get any of them to go in.
Waseca was shut out for the third time this season as it suffered a 7-0 loss to the Dodge County Wildcats in Kasson Jan. 25.
The Wildcats captured their third consecutive win and remained unbeaten on their home ice with their seventh win. DC climbed to 14-3-1 for the year.
The Bluejays suffered their fifth loss in the last seven games in falling to 6-9 overall. Waseca is 3-3 on the road this season.
Waseca got out shot 12-7 in the opening period but Taryn Juberien kept the Wildcats from scoring and the teams left the ice in a scoreless deadlock.
DC punched in three second-period goals to break the game open, and followed with another four goals in the final period.
The Wildcats held a 39 to 27 shots' advantage in the game, out shooting the Jays in every period.
Juberien faced 37 shots before getting relieved by Laura Weichert in the final period. Juberien allowed six goals while making 31 saves. Weichert stopped one of the two shots she faced.
Coach Kyle Collins's Bluejays were 0-4 on the power play and 2-4 in penalty kills.
Waseca travels to New Ulm Jan. 27 for a first-place battle in the South Central Conference. The Eagles won the first meeting 4-2, Waseca's only conference loss.
The Bluejays travel to Worthington Jan. 29, before returning for home games against Rochester Century Jan. 31 and Fairmont Feb. 1.

Northfield blanks Jay girl pucksters

WASECA - The Northfield Raiders girls' hockey team was glad to visit Waseca.
The Raiders, who have a winning record on the road, blanked the Bluejays 7-0 at the Waseca Arena Jan. 4, sending Waseca to its third consecutive defeat.
Northfield improved to 7-6-2 for the season, including a 4-2-1 record on the road.
Waseca, which is just 3-5 on its home ice, was shut out for the second time this winter. The Bluejays are 4-7 overall.
Coach Kyle Collins's crew was unable to stop the Raider attack, especially sophomore Cassie Thomas who pumped in four goals.
Despite getting out shot 8-1, the Jays trailed only 1-0 after the opening period. But, Northfield wore down Waseca and scored three goals in each of the final two periods.
The Raiders dominated the action, out shooting Waseca 27 to 10 in the game. The Jays never got more than five shots in any period.
Laura Weichert took the loss in the nets for the Bluejays. She made 24 saves in defeat.
Sam Stark stuffed all 10 shots she faced from Waseca.
Waseca had four power-play chances in the game, but failed to convert on any of them.
Two of the Northfield goals were power plays, coming on four chances.
The Bluejays, currently sitting on top of the South Central Conference standings with a 2-0 record, tangle with defending champ New Ulm at the Waseca Arena Jan. 6.
Waseca will then have a week to prepare for a non-conference tilt at Windom.

AL's 6 straight goals down Waseca girls

WASECA - The Albert Lea girls' hockey team scored six unanswered goals to defeat Waseca 7-1 at the Waseca Arena Nov. 30.
It was the second straight win for the Tigers and improved their record to 2-3 for the year. Waseca fell to 1-3 overall.
Waseca tied the game 1-1 in the opening period, but it would be the only Bluejay goal of the night. Brittany Miller fired in her fourth goal this season, assisted by Katie Weisinger.
However, the rest of the night belonged to Albert Lea. The Tigers led 2-1 after the opening period, 4-1 after two periods and added three goals in the final period.
Natasha Moyer sparked the visitors by recording a hat trick.
Albert Lea held a slim 18 to 15 shots' advantage after two periods but out shot the Bluejays 15-3 in the final period to finish with a 33 to 18 advantage for the game.
Laura Weichert was in goal for the Bluejays, making 26 saves.
Waseca failed to score on its lone power-play opportunity in the game and failed to stop the Tigers on their only power play.
Waseca opens South Central Conference action at Fairmont Dec. 2.
New Prague comes to town for a non-conference clash Dec. 14.

Quandt-led East overpowers Bluejays

MANKATO - In Waseca's first three hockey games this season, and individual has scored five goals.
For the second time, it was one of the opponents who blistered the Waseca girls' hockey nets. Sophomore Savannah Quandt powered in five goals to lead the undefeated Mankato East Cougars to an 8-3 triumph over Waseca in Mankato Nov. 23.
The Cougars climbed to 4-0 this season while Waseca suffered its second loss in three starts.
Mankato led 3-2 after one period, out shooting the Bluejays 11-5.
Quandt and Sarah Biesterveld got the Cougars off to an early 2-0 start. Taryn Juberien's goal cut the Waseca deficit to 2-1 but Maddie McCarger slapped one in from the left circle for a two-goal margin.
Brittany Miller capitalized on a Waseca power-play opportunity before the end of the period to narrow the deficit to one goal.
Quandt warmed up in the second period, knocking in three goals for the Cougars. Dana Sopkowiak, coming off her five-goal game against Austin, got the lone Waseca goal, leaving East with a 6-3 advantage heading into the final period. The Cougars held a 26-9 shots' advantage after two periods.
Quandt and Rebekah Kolstad found the net for East in the final period, while the Jays were held scoreless.
Mankato out shot the Bluejays by a wide 45 to 13 margin. Eighth-grade goalie Katie Paulson made her first start in the nets for East and stopped 10 Waseca shots. Laura Weichert made 37 saves for the Bluejays.
Waseca was 2-6 on power play opportunities and skated off its lone penalty.
The Bluejays will battle New Prague at the Waseca Community Arena Dec. 14.
