Bluejay girls blank Trojans for 2nd time

WORTHINGTON - the Waseca girls' hockey team dominated the Worthington Trojans for the second time this winter.
The Jays blanked Worthington 7-0 at Worthington Jan. 29. Waseca had won the previous meeting 6-0.
The Bluejays raised their overall record to 7-9-1 with its third shutout of the season. Waseca has three wins and a tie in its last five games, and is 4-3-1 on the road this winter.
Worthington lost its third game in a row, and has just one tie to show for its last 12 starts. The Trojans, who are 0-6-2 on their home ice, fell to 1-15-2 overall.
Coach Kyle Collins's Bluejays jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period, out shooting the Trojans 12-2. Waseca increased its lead to 5-0 after two periods, and added a pair of goals in the final period.
Waseca held a 22-6 shots' advantage after tow periods and ended the game with a 29-9 advantage.
Taryn Juberien and Mackenzie Jorgenson paced the Bluejay offense with two goals apiece. Juberien also added an assist.
Abbe Hoehn, Alicia Knoll and Olivia McIntosh also scored goals for Waseca. Knoll scored on a power play.
Hoehn, Laura Kunz and Maddy Knoll added assists for the winners.
The Jays were one for three on power plays and skated off all three of their penalties.
Taylor Juberien and Laura Weichert combined on the shutout. Weichert made six saves and Jubeiren stopped three shots.
Waseca has home games against Fairmont Feb. 7 and Windom the following evening.

Sopkowiak's 5 goals spark Jays to win

WASECA - Senior Dana Sopkowiak's five goals sparked the Waseca girls' hockey team to its first win of the season. The Bluejays evened their record at 1-1 by edging Austin 7-6 at the Waseca Arena Nov. 20.
The Packers thumped Waseca 12-3 a year ago. Sopkowiak had a hat trick in the opening period, and her five goals were a new school record for goals in a game.
The Bluejays held a 4-3 lead after one period, despite being out shot 16 to 10. Sopkowiak had three goals and seventh-grader Maddy Knoll scored her first varsity goal for the Bluejays.
Waseca managed only four shots on goal in the second period but left the ice deadlocked 5-5. Sophomore Brittany Miller scored for the Jays on a power play.
The Bluejays fell behind 6-5 in the final period on a Carly Grunewald goal by the Packers, her second of the game. However, Sopkowiak got the Jays back to 6-6 with her fourth goal of the day just 1:08 later.
The game winner came at the 13:30 mark. Olivia McIntosh fired a shot at the net and Sopkowiak was right there to knock in the rebound.
Austin out shot the Bluejays 32 to 16 in the contest. Waseca had just six shots on goal over the final two periods.
Waseca connected on two of nine power play opportunities, and skated off two of its three penalties. The Jay won 40 of 65 face-offs.
The Bluejays travel to Mankato East for a 5:30 p.m. face-off Nov. 23. Albert Lea comes to Waseca Nov. 30.

Century topples Waseca girls in opener

ROCHESTER - Seventh-grader Jessica Aney sparked the Rochester Century Panthers to a 7-3, season-opening victory over the Waseca girls' hockey team in Rochester Nov. 16.
Coach Kyle Collins's Bluejays are hoping to improve on last season's 6-12-1 record.
Aney was more than the Bluejay defense could handle as she knifed her way to five of the seven goals.
Kathryn Aney and Alison Schulte also scored for the Panthers.
Rochester held a 3-0 lead after one period and a 6-1 advantage heading into the final period.
Dana Sopkowiak, Brittany Miller and Alicia Knoll scored goals for the Jays in the opener. Katelyn Miller chipped in with a pair of assists.
Century ended up with a 28 to 18 shots' advantage, including 23 to 11 in the first two periods. Waseca was 0-5 in power play opportunities and 1-2 in penalty kills.
Abby Cunningham earned the win in the Rochester net. She stopped 10 of 11 shots while playing the first two periods.
Laura Weichert had 21 saves in goal for Waseca.
The Bluejays will host Austin at 1 p.m. Nov. 20 in their home opener.
Waseca travels to Mankato East Nov. 23.
