Two new fall sport coaches at Waseca

Waseca High School will have two new head varsity coaches this fall.

Kelli Fagerness has replaced Leslie Bremer as Waseca's girls' volleyball coach. Bremer had coached the Jays the last two seasons. Waseca will be looking to improve on last year's 8-14 record and fourth place finish in the South Central Conference.

Maria Pires takes over for Greg Miller as Waseca's girls' soccer coach. The Bluejays were 3-10-1 in Miller's final season.

The Bluejay volleyball team opens its season with a home match against Rochester Lourdes Aug. 31. The Waseca girls' soccer team gets its season underway at Albert Lea Aug. 27.


Anderson hired for Loyola hoops

MANKATO - Former Maple River coach Tim Anderson has been named the new boys' basketball coach at Mankato Loyola. He replaces John Landkammer, who has been the Crusader head coach since 2004.

Anderson was the head coach at Maple River for 19 seasons. He compiled a 272-93 record with 10 Valley Conference championships and three state tournament teams.

Anderson did not coach in 2008, before returning to lead the Maple River girls to a 19-5 record last year.

Anderson is a teacher and counselor in the Maple river district. He will continue in that capacity and coach the MR girls' tennis team in the fall.

Loyola was 14-12 last season and plays in the Gopher Conference with WEM, NRHEG and JWP.

Beckmann inducted into 5th Hall of Fame

ST. CLOUD - Long time Waseca boys basketball coach, Manny Beckmann, will be inducted into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Hall of Fame July 14th at St. Cloud. The ceremony will be held at the Best Western Kelly Inn. It will be the fifth Hall of Fame that Beckmann is inducted to.

Beckmann was a standout athlete at Wells High School and Mankato State College from 1950-54. He then enjoyed a successful coaching career at Waseca.

Beckmann earned 12 letters at Wells in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was an All-State quarterback and third team All-American in 1949.

Beckmann remains the only athlete at Mankato State to earn 11 athletic letters. He lettered four times in both football and basketball and three times in track, missing his senior season to student teaching.

Beckmann was a football captain and two-time all-conference performer. He was the conference MVP and held the passing and rushing records at MSU for 15 years.

Beckmann was a two-time all-conference athlete on the basketball court.

Boy Bb coaches announce awards

MINNEAPOLIS -The Minnesota Boys' Basketball Coaches Association announced a number of winners at the completion of the 2009-10 hoops season.

Josh Williams of Owatonna (Section 1AAAA) and Bruce Kugath of Shakopee (2AAA) were selected Section Coaches of the Year.

Waseca's Nick Hanson was named to the Academic All-State Team for Classes AAA and AAAA.

Owatonna (1AAAA) and Shakopee (2AAAA) were Section Academic Team champs.

Owatonna was the State Academic Team Champion in Class AAAA.

Bakken is football coach of the year

MINNEAPOLIS - Waterville-Elysian-Morristown football coach, Jon Bakken, reeled in another honor from the state championship season.

Bakken, who previously was named the Gopher/Valley Conference, Section 2AA and Class AA Coach of the year, has been named the Minnesota Football Coach of the Year by the Minnesota Football Coaches Association.

Bakken, who has coached at Waterville for 23 years, has a 220-65 record in 25 seasons as a head coach.

Bakken's teams have reached the state championship game four times and won three of them. He is also the head boys' track and field coach of the Buccaneers.
